This term is widely used in the world of perfume but you may know them as essential oils, this term you may have heard in reference to aromatherapy. In perfume making the term describes where it came from, the purity and the technique that was used to get a certain fragrance extract. There are 5 ways to extract a fragrance extract. They are absolute, concrete, essential oils, pomade and tincture.
Absolute with this form of extraction the fragrant materials are purified from a pomade or concrete but by absolute you soak the material sin ethanol. By using the ethanol it extracts the compound from the source material and the fragrance can be taken out in the form of an oily liquid. Concrete, this is when fragrant materials are used to take out the raw materials through the solvent extraction using hydrocarbons.
Essential oils, these fragrant materials are extracted from a source material that comes directly from distillation or expression and the extracts are produced as an oily liquid form. Pomade is solid mass of fat that is created from the effleurage process where the smells are in raw materials and are transformed into animal fat. Tincture, these fragrant materials are produced by soaking the raw materials in ethanol. The extracts are thin liquids. As confusing as the extracting process may be, they are very effective in the perfume creation process.
